In the first issue of this year’s technology & more magazine, our users from the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) made the cover with their use of eCognition to generate the first comprehensive geospatial dataset for the island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The cover story was entitled “A New Look at Ancient Faces” (link requires Flash player).
Due to the the isolated nature of the island and limited budgets the researches did not have an adequate data source for their study. They therefore turned to UAS-based data collection with the Trimble UX5 to generate an entirely new dataset.
They found that eCognition provided the best analytical solution for the immense amounts of data they needed to process. In fact, the Trimble eCognition solution worked so well that it convinced the researchers to expand the aerial imaging campaign over the entire island.
