A recent article from Thomas Blaschke and Ivan Tomljenovic in the November edition of GIM entitled “OBIA and Point Clouds – Airborne Lidar and Object-based Image Analysis” poses the question in the introduction – “Is OBIA also suited for the semi-automatic classification of Lidar point clouds?”
This could not have come at a better time, as we just released our Trimble eCognition v9.3 software last week, which includes new 3D point cloud analytics that broaden the range of applications and information that can be automatically extracted.
As new sensors and techniques for the generation of point cloud data becomes more widespread, so will the use of such data in remote sensing applications. Therefore, we jumped at the opportunity to enhance point cloud integration within the eCognition.
Blaschke and Tomljenovic provide an excellent description of Airborne Laser Scanner (ALS) systems and the added value they provide in image analysis routines. In addition, they outline an approach for the automatic extraction of building footprints from a Trimble Harrier 68i system.
